Bagel Burger

The inspiration for this sandwich came from one of my favorite sandwiches growing up: the Bagel Burger.  My friend’s grandparents owned a little deli and my family loved to order their bagel burger whenever we had the chance.  It is simply a bagel loaded with cream cheese, ham and cheese, which is then wrapped in foil and warmed until all of the cheeses melt together.

I re-created it the best that I could.  I don’t remember what type of cheese they used so I picked Havarti for a very creamy sandwich.  Provolone or Swiss cheese would also work.  I like to use ham but you could make it with a mix of deli meats.

This sandwich is simply a bagel loaded with cream cheese, ham and havarti cheese, which is then wrapped in foil and warmed until all of the cheeses melt together.
Ingredients
  • 1 plain bagel, sliced in half
  • 3-4 Tbsp light cream cheese
  • 2 slices of thick ham or 3-4 slices of thin deli ham
  • 1 slice of Havarti cheese (or another cheese of your choice)
Instructions
  1. Spread roughly 1½-2 Tbsp cream cheese on each half of the bagel. Place the ham slices on the bottom half of the bagel followed by a slice of cheese.
  2. Place the top half of the bagel on the cheese and press the sandwich together.
  3. Wrap it in foil and bake it at 350 degrees for roughly 15-20 minutes, or until the sandwich is hot and the cheese is melted and runny.
  4. Remove the sandwich from the foil and microwave it for 20-30 seconds to soften it and finish melting the cheese.
  5. Serve the "burger" warm (with lots of napkins!).
