Béchamel Sauce

Béchamel Sauce is a basic French sauce used as a thickener and base for many other sauces and dishes.  It is essentially a roux (equal parts fat and flour) with milk.  Just because it’s a French sauce, don’t let it scare you away.  It’s actually simple to make and can be incorporated into non-French meals, such as Macaroni and Cheese.

Béchamel Sauce is a basic French sauce used as a thickener and base for many other sauces and dishes.
Ingredients
  • 2 Tbsp butter
  • 2 Tbsp flour
  • 2 cups milk
Instructions
  1. Melt the butter in a pan over medium-low heat.
  2. Stir in the flour and then add the milk gradually, whisking constantly until the mixture thickens. It is better to cook it slowly so that it does not burn or boil.
  3. Remove from heat.
  4. TIP: If you warm the milk before stirring it into the flour and butter mixture, you will have better luck getting your sauce to thicken.
