Our sourdough starter has been in the family since the mid 1950’s. My mom lived in Bremerton, Washington and remembers going razor clam digging at Copalis Beach on the Washington coast with her family and some family friends…the starter came from these friends of my grandparents. Between my grandpa, grand aunt, uncle and mom, the starter has stayed alive all of these years. My mom’s cousin even took them some starter when they lived in Japan for three years. She was a flight attendant so she could refrigerate it on the plane. When she arrived my parents met her in Tokyo and “rushed” it to their house on the air force base. They passed it around to their friends in Japan. Then when they got back to the United States my grandpa had another starter for them. Over the years, my family and close family friends have helped each other out when someone has lost the starter. (If a sourdough starter is not continually used and “fed” then it will die.) Fortunately, we have several starters around!
