As a kid it always seemed a bit crazy yet exciting and invigorating to get up so early on December 13, one of the shortest, darkest days of the year, just for breakfast. In fact, it always seemed dreamy and surreal. As a child my family celebrated Santa Lucia with some good family friends every year.

Monkey bread is always a favorite with groups, however, in some settings it is not practical or easy for everyone to literally pull apart from the same loaf of bread. Earlier this year I made my monkey bread in muffin tins for individual servings that turned out perfectly for a party.

My almost four-year old son has been showing more signs of independent eating but he didn't even care that these rolls contained two cups of spinach. They have a lovely shade of green so I will definitely tuck them away for St. Patrick's Day but we will be making these many times before then, too.

It is easy to turn any bread {sweet or savory} into little turtles. I kneaded chocolate chips into my dough to make the turtle extra special and I decorated it with a powdered sugar glaze. Needless to say that my son was super excited when he saw a turtle coming out of the oven!
