Hot Cross Buns

This Easter season I decided to mix it up and try a new hot cross bun recipe from The Good Housekeeping Illustrated Cookbook. It’s a classic sweet bread recipe that can be used for many purposes. These moist, buttery rolls are yummy plain or with dried fruit.

Pierogi

Pierogi (also commonly spelled perogi) are Eastern European dumplings that are filled and then either boiled, baked or fried. As with other dumplings found around the world pierogi vary with each chef and can be stuffed with sweet or savory fillings. This Polish version of pierogi comes from my husband’s Grandmother who was of Polish descent. They are filled with a typical Polish filling of boiled potatoes, cottage cheese and onion.

Almond Crescents

These flaky, buttery pastries in the shape of a crescent are essentially croissants. I like to make an assortment of flavors but these almond crescents oozing with melt-in-your-mouth almond filling are my favorite.

Ariel Cupcakes

Making chocolate with molds is an easy way to decorate cupcakes, especially when you are trying to make an intricate design. I found generic mermaid chocolate molds and colored them to look like Ariel from The Little Mermaid for an Ariel-themed birthday party.

Dessert Sushi

Dessert sushi was the perfect addition to a treat table that I recently did for an Ariel and Under the Sea-themed birthday party. The sushi is easy to make and something that your kids will have fun helping you prepare.

Ariel Birthday Party

As part of a Festival of Trees gala event Itsy Bitsy Foodies donated a cupcake and treat table for a children’s birthday party as a premium for one of the auction trees. Aubree, the birthday girl, chose an Ariel theme for her 5th birthday and had a pool party at the public pool.

St. Patrick’s Day Breakfast Casserole

Color your breakfast casserole green with spinach juice for a festive St. Paddy’s Day breakfast. Bake it in heart shapes and arrange the cooked green hearts into shamrocks, the symbol of Ireland.

Blackberry Maple Syrup

Shrove Tuesday. Fat Tuesday. Mardi Gras (literally “Fat Tuesday” in French). Pancake Day. No matter what your background is, today offers a fun excuse to have pancakes for dinner (something that was always one of my favorites when I was a kid). To celebrate, I made my buttermilk pancakes more festive with a chunky blackberry maple syrup.
